Artist Statement - Erik Hesson
My artistic journey began in an unconventional way—through vivid, highly-cognitive dream states that sparked my initial foray into painting. As a self-taught artist, my evolution has been a deeply personal and exploratory process, defined by experimentation across various styles and techniques. Over the years, I have ventured into Abstract Expressionism, Geometric Abstraction, and Impressionism; allowing me to explore different dimensions of visual expression.
Central to my artistic practice is the continual push to innovate, which led to the creation of my signature style: Linear Perspectivism. This new approach reimagines the Classical Principle of Linear Perspective as the foundation of abstract compositions, rather than a supporting element. Through the use of basic geometric forms, dynamic texture, and vibrant colors, I strive to create idealized three-dimensional compositions that offer a new visual language in art.
Linear Perspectivism is not just a technique; it is a philosophical approach to how we perceive and interpret space. By elevating linear perspective to the forefront of the composition, I aim to challenge the viewer's understanding of depth, form, and proportion. My influences are varied, drawing from the geometric precision of Kandinsky, the fragmented forms of Picasso's Cubism, and the timeless principles of classical art.
In 2022, I launched UniqueModernArt.com, a platform to share my work and connect with a broader audience. My work has been featured in several exhibitions across the Tampa Bay area, including the Dali Dozen 2023 show at the Dali Museum, where I had the opportunity to showcase my evolving exploration of Linear Perspectivism.
Art, for me, is more than just a medium for self-expression—it is a continuous dialogue between the mind, the canvas, and the viewer. My goal is to invite others into this dialogue, to explore the possibilities of perspective, and to see the world through a lens that is at once abstract and deeply structured.
"What Cubism did to the Cube, Linear Perspectivism does to Linear Perspective." This statement encapsulates my mission to redefine how we see and understand the visual world, challenging conventions and expanding the boundaries of artistic expression.
